I really wanted to put up this poster by the left turn lane heading south on Main Street off of Terminal. But alas, time has not permitted… YET. These will have to do for now as an example of where this poster could possibly make an impact on peoples thoughts towards homeless (or apparently homeless) people. Everyone has a name. Everyone has a personality. Everyone has problems.

Still working on putting my poster up in a real location! I promise I will do that this week. I’m planning on tacking it to the big tree on the median beside the left turn lane on Terminal Ave to be seen as you turn left on to Main Street. This is a common squeegee spot, so I think it will be fitting. I might get it laminated first and leave it there.

Design for the Future

I’ve been checking out some of my classmates blogs for the final CGIA 215 project, a 12 page publication about… anything. By the looks of things, many of us have chosen to go down the road of creating a mini, printed portfolio. It seemed like the logical thing to make for this project, wouldn’t you say? I mean, we can take it to interviews and whatnot. It’s not only a portfolio piece, it is a portfolio itself.

Simple enough, or so I thought. I chatted with Suzi a bit about this idea, and she suggested that I attempt to focus the work in some way, as opposed to having a mish mash of projects. I found this difficult, as my work is so broad in scope. I have everything from photography to graphic design to scale models to retail merchandising… I wanted to somehow bring all these things together under a common theme… Bingo! Sustainability! (My favorite subject).

Instead of a straight-up portfolio, I’m creating a mini-zine of my work and related products which happen to be sustainable. Ha ha. I just realized that this is really hard to explain. I guess you guys will have to wait and see the final product. What I’m worried about now is if the DOC will have any available appointments this week! Yikes. Should have booked last week!

Reflections

Video fun times. What an entertaining process this film making stuff is turning out to be. I stayed home for last week’s class to work on it (I had just gotten a new tattoo on my back and needed to NOT trek around the city with my back pack) and I got a lot done. I particularly enjoyed tooling around busy Robson Street (alone) with my tripod setting up shots outside store windows and trying to find myself in the reflections!! haha! That was ridiculously difficult. Mental note, get an assistant next time.

My concept: Body image. I know I’m not the only girl who is not always entirely satisfied with her physical appearance. I’m not saying that I think I’m particularly ugly or anything, but I sometimes have trouble feeling like I look good. I’m not ashamed of this, actually I like the fact that I’m aware of it because it helps me realize how silly I can be sometimes. I think this is a common issue, not even only for women, but that’s what I want my short video to focus on. It’s about the action of self-scrutiny that can be brought on by feelings of poor self esteem, often exacerbated by the media.

I tried making this a silent film, but realized that I needed a beat to give the action some rhythm. There is a fantastic site called Free Play Music which allows you to use their tracks royalty-free, providing you are not using them for commercial use. Lot’s of film students use this site when making projects for school. Anyway, I didn’t want the final product to look like a music video, so I chose a track that was purely to give the visuals a nice beat to follow.

I have a couple more tweaks to make before I post, but I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. I’m slightly mortified that I have to watch myself on video in front of a room full of people, but hey, it’s part of the process right?

I’m seriously considering going into architecture… I am slowly realizing that my passion for sustainable design is continually leading me in that general direction. Maybe it’s because the majority of curriculum, publications and media currently focus on the building industry when it comes to sustainability. Maybe it’s because I feel at home in a studio surrounded by scraps of paper and cardboard, painstakingly gluing intricate details on a scale model. Maybe I just feel like I need to finally pick a path and stick with it. Whatever my reasons, I’m getting excited here people. Although, this decision may mean leaving Emily Carr sooner than expected, I think it might be just what the doctor ordered. Time to start researching.

Urban Intervention – Round 2

This would actually be on the doorway that leads into the food court. (I’ll take a pic tomorrow, didn’t have my camera today). Hopefully I can get some feedback on this tonight as I made an appointment at the doc for tomorrow. I think Julie’s comment that I had almost corporatized “Live Green” was right on. I think the comic book-esque thought bubble might communicate my message a bit better, and it’s kinda funny. It’s going to be positioned right above the head of everyone entering the market.
